We answer these questions across the counter every single day. Rather than repeat ourselves, we wrote everything down — honestly, including the parts that cost us money to admit. Part 1: Ring Resizing
1. How much can a ring be resized?
Most rings can move comfortably up or down about two sizes. Some tolerate three. Beyond that, you're asking the metal to do something it wasn't designed to do.
Sizing up means either stretching the existing metal or cutting the shank and adding new metal. Stretching thins the band, and a band that was already worn thin can end up structurally weak. Adding metal is stronger but requires matching the alloy so the color and finish blend invisibly.
Sizing down means removing a section and rejoining. That's generally the easier direction, though it can distort the shape of engraved or patterned bands.
When someone needs four or more sizes of change, we usually recommend a new shank — replacing the bottom portion of the band entirely. It costs more than a simple resize but produces a stronger ring than stretching ever will.
2. Will I be able to see where the ring was resized?
No, not on properly finished work. The seam is soldered or laser welded, then filed, sanded, and polished until it matches the surrounding metal. If you can see where a ring was sized, it was finished poorly.
The exception is a ring with a pattern, texture, or engraving running around the full band. Removing or adding metal interrupts that pattern, and re-cutting it to match is skilled hand work that takes time. We'll show you what to expect before we start.
3. Can eternity bands be resized?
Sometimes, and it depends on construction.
A true eternity band has stones set around the entire circumference, so there's no plain metal to cut. Resizing means removing stones, altering the band, and resetting — expensive, and it changes the spacing.
Some eternity bands can be sized up slightly by stretching. Others can't be touched at all without compromising the setting. Channel-set eternity bands are particularly unforgiving because the channel walls must stay perfectly parallel.
Often the better answer for an eternity band is sizing beads, a ring guard, or having a new band made to the correct size. We'll tell you honestly which category yours falls into.
4. Can a ring with heat-sensitive stones be resized?
Yes, but the method changes.
Emeralds, opals, pearls, tanzanite, topaz, and most treated or fracture-filled stones can crack, cloud, or change color under torch heat. Traditional soldering spreads heat across the entire piece, which is exactly what you don't want.
Laser welding delivers heat to a spot measured in fractions of a millimeter. That lets us work on the shank while the stone stays set, often without removing it at all. This is the single biggest reason we keep laser equipment in-house.
For particularly fragile stones, we may still recommend removing and resetting. We'll explain why if we do.
5. Can silver and platinum rings be resized?
Both, yes, though they behave very differently.
Sterling silver is soft and conducts heat rapidly, which makes it easy to overheat and firescale. It's straightforward for an experienced jeweler and unforgiving for an inexperienced one.
Platinum requires much higher temperatures and specific platinum solder or laser welding. It's denser and harder to work, so platinum sizing generally costs more than gold. It's also more durable once done.
Tungsten, titanium, and ceramic rings genuinely cannot be resized. The materials can't be cut and rejoined. Those need replacement, and most manufacturers offer a size exchange.
6. How much does ring resizing cost?
Nationally, simple gold ring resizing typically starts somewhere around $50 to $150. Platinum work, complex settings, stone tightening, shank rebuilding, or multiple prong repairs can push a job into several hundred dollars.
The variables are metal type, how many sizes you're moving, whether stones must be removed and reset, whether the shank needs rebuilding, and whether a pattern needs re-cutting.
Any jeweler quoting you a price over the phone without seeing the ring is guessing. Bring it in and we'll quote it accurately, for free.
7. What if my ring is too tight to remove?
Don't force it, and don't let it stay that way. A ring that won't come off can restrict circulation, and if your finger swells further it becomes a medical problem rather than a jewelry one.
Try cold water, elevation, and a lubricant first. If that fails, a jeweler can cut the ring off safely and repair it afterward — a cut shank is a routine fix. If there's swelling, discoloration, numbness, or pain, go to an urgent care or emergency room rather than a jeweler.
Once it's off, size it properly. People often just stop wearing a ring instead, which is a sad ending for a piece that means something.
8. Should I size for summer or winter?
Fingers genuinely change size. Heat, salt, exercise, altitude, pregnancy, and time of day all move the number, and swings of half a size are normal.
Size to your average, and check in the afternoon when your hands are at a typical baseline — not first thing in the morning and not immediately after a workout. A correctly fitted ring slides on with light resistance, clears the knuckle without a fight, and doesn't spin freely.
Part 2: Prongs, Settings, and Loose Stones
9. How do I know if a stone is loose?
Hold the piece close to your ear and tap it gently with a fingernail. A faint rattle or tick means the stone is moving. Healthy settings are silent.
Other signs: the stone rotates when you nudge it, the piece catches on fabric and sweaters, or you can see a gap between prong and stone under magnification.
If you notice any of these, stop wearing the piece and bring it in. A loose stone becomes a lost stone faster than most people expect — usually while doing something ordinary.
10. What is prong retipping and do I need it?
Prongs are the tiny metal claws holding your stone. They wear down through ordinary contact — fabric, countertops, steering wheels — slowly and invisibly. Retipping means adding new metal to rebuild the worn tips.
If your ring is worn daily and has never been retipped in a decade, it almost certainly needs it. Prongs that snag on clothing are the earliest warning, because a snag means the tip has worn thin enough to develop an edge.
Here's the economics, and it's the most important thing on this page: retipping is one of the least expensive repairs a jeweler performs. Replacing a lost center diamond is one of the most expensive purchases a person ever makes. Nothing else in jewelry maintenance has that return.
11. How often should prongs be checked?
Every six months for a daily-worn piece. Annually for occasional pieces.
Most jewelers, including us, inspect prongs free with any cleaning. That's not a sales tactic — it's how loose stones get caught before they're lost, and it's the entire reason a routine cleaning is worth scheduling.
12. What's the difference between retipping and replacing the head?
Retipping adds metal to existing prongs. Head replacement swaps out the entire setting the stone sits in.
Retipping is cheaper and preserves the original mounting, which matters enormously on antique and sentimental pieces. But when prongs are worn down past a certain point, adding metal to a compromised base just produces a prong that fails again sooner. At that stage, replacement is the honest recommendation.
A jeweler should show you the wear under magnification and let you see why. If someone recommends a new head without showing you anything, ask them to.
13. Which setting types hold stones most securely?
Bezel settings, where metal wraps the stone's perimeter, are the most secure and best for active lifestyles. Flush or gypsy settings, where the stone sits inside the metal surface, are similarly protective.
Prong settings show more of the stone and let more light in, which is why they dominate engagement rings — but they're the most exposed and need the most maintenance.
Channel and pavé settings look seamless but have many small points of failure, and a single loose accent stone in a pavé row often signals wear across the whole row.
Tension settings, where the stone is held by pressure alone, look remarkable and are the least forgiving of any alteration.
14. I lost a stone. Can you match it?
In most cases, yes. We match on size, cut, color, and clarity so the replacement blends with the surrounding stones rather than announcing itself.
Bring any grading report you have — GIA, IGI, GCAL, or HRD. Bring the empty mounting. If you have a photograph of the piece before the loss, bring that too.
Check your homeowner's or renter's insurance and any scheduled jewelry policy before paying out of pocket. Loss is often covered even when damage isn't.
15. Can you set a diamond I bought somewhere else?
Yes, and it's routine. Bring the stone and the mounting, or bring the stone and let us design something around it.
We'll examine the stone first and note its condition, because a stone with existing inclusions near the girdle or prior chipping carries elevated risk during setting. We'll tell you before we start rather than after.
Part 3: Chains, Clasps, and Necklaces
16. Why do chains always break in the same place?
Because the failure points are predictable. Most chains break at the jump ring beside the clasp, inside the clasp mechanism itself, or at the link sitting at the back of the neck taking constant friction.
Repairing only the broken link puts the piece back into service with the same weak point intact. A good jeweler inspects the whole chain, tells you where the next failure is likely, and offers to reinforce it while the piece is already on the bench.
17. Can a hollow chain be repaired?
Often, but with honest caveats. Hollow rope and hollow curb chains are made from thin metal wrapped around empty space. There's very little material to work with, and torch heat can collapse the walls.
Laser welding is usually the only responsible approach. Even then, a hollow chain that has broken once will typically break again elsewhere, because the whole length has aged equally.
We'll repair it and tell you plainly how much life it likely has left.
18. My herringbone chain is kinked. Can it be fixed?
Partially, and this is the repair we most often have to disappoint people on.
Herringbone chains are made of flat, angled links lying against each other. Once kinked, the links are permanently deformed. Straightening improves appearance but never fully restores the original drape, and the kinked section stays the weakest point.
For a badly kinked herringbone, replacing the damaged section is more honest than straightening it. Any jeweler who promises a perfect restoration on a kinked herringbone is overpromising.
19. Can you untangle knotted chains without cutting them?
Usually yes. It's patient handwork under magnification with fine tools, and it takes as long as it takes.
We've untangled bundles of several necklaces knotted together that customers had written off entirely. Cutting is a last resort, not a starting point.
Store chains hanging or individually pouched, and clasp them before putting them away. That single habit prevents almost all of this.
20. Should I upgrade my clasp?
If the piece is valuable or sentimental, yes. Spring ring clasps are the most common and the least secure — the internal spring weakens with age and eventually fails to close fully.
Lobster clasps are stronger. Box clasps with a figure-eight safety catch are stronger still. For heavy pendants or heirloom pieces, the upgrade is inexpensive insurance against losing the whole necklace.
21. Can you shorten or lengthen a necklace?
Both. Shortening removes links and reattaches the clasp. Lengthening adds matching chain or an extender.
When shortening, ask whether the removed section is long enough to become a bracelet. Turning one inherited 30-inch chain into a wearable 18-inch necklace plus a bracelet is one of the more satisfying things we do.
Part 4: Soldering, Laser Welding, and Structural Repair
22. What's the difference between soldering and laser welding?
Soldering joins metal using a filler alloy that melts at a lower temperature than the pieces being joined, heated with a torch. The heat spreads across the whole piece.
Laser welding fuses the metal directly using a focused beam, with a heat-affected zone measured in fractions of a millimeter.
Neither is universally better. Torch soldering produces excellent structural strength on a plain band and is often the right choice. Laser welding is essential when working near heat-sensitive stones, on antique patina, near enamel, or on very thin metal. A well-equipped shop has both and chooses deliberately.
23. Should I solder my engagement ring and wedding band together?
It's a matter of preference with real trade-offs.
Soldered together, the rings stop rotating independently, stop wearing grooves into each other, and sit flush. Many people prefer the look and the comfort.
The downsides: you can no longer wear them separately, resizing becomes more complex, and cleaning between them is harder. It's also reversible, though separating them requires refinishing both.
Live with them stacked unsoldered for a while before deciding.
24. Can gold be soldered to platinum?
Yes, though it requires care. The metals have very different melting points and behave differently under heat. Laser welding handles mixed-metal joins better than torch work in most cases.
Mixed-metal pieces are common in vintage jewelry — platinum tops on gold shanks were standard in early twentieth-century rings. Any jeweler working on antique pieces should be comfortable with this.
25. My ring cracked. Is it repairable or is it finished?
Usually repairable. Cracks in a shank typically come from thinning metal, prior repairs, or porosity in the original casting.
The important question isn't whether the crack can be closed — it usually can — but whether the surrounding metal is sound enough to hold. If the band has worn thin overall, closing one crack just moves the failure a few millimeters over. That's when we recommend a new shank instead.
